  3. IT SOLUTIONS INTRODUCES NEXTSTEP CLIENT FOR HEWLETT-PACKARD OPENMAIL

  5. Year-old relationship between NeXT and HP bears third party fruit

  7. CHICAGO, Oct 3, 1994 -- Chicago-based IT
  8. Solutions announced today that it is shipping a new electronic mail client for
  9. Hewlett-Packard Company's client/server enterprise-wide messaging system, HP
  10. OpenMail. IT solutions has developed a NEXTSTEP application called Emissary
  11. which offers all the power and features of NeXT's native electronic mail
  12. application.  Emissary is now integrated with OpenMail and enables seamless
  13. operation with other OpenMail supported client applications.

  15. OpenMail's server based messaging facilities are independent of the desktop
  16. client interface, and therefore extends its services to all clients using
  17. OpenMail.  OpenMail supports a wide variety of third party client applications
  18. on the Windows, Macintosh, UNIX Motif, OS/2, and DOS platforms via industry
  19. leading client API's, such as MAPI, VIM and CMC.

  21. Ted Shelton, President and CEO of IT Solutions said, "Emissary sets a
  22. new standard of quality for OpenMail client applications by bringing the
  23. popular features of NEXTSTEP and NeXT's own mail application to the scalable
  24. and interoperable X.400/X.500 based enterprise-wide messaging system from
  25. Hewlett-Packard."  Shelton stressed the advantage of being able to package and
  26. route any kind of information with OpenMail as well as other OpenMail supported
  27. client applications being able to access this information. "The inclusion of
  28. Emissary as an OpenMail supported client, extends yet another powerful tool
  29. across corporate enterprises," stated Korak Mitra, Messaging Business Manager
  30. for HP's enterprise messaging solution.

  32. Large companies are looking to manageable and scalable client/server
  33. messaging solutions like OpenMail, because messaging is serving a crucial role
  34. in providing enterprise communication between divisions and geographically
  35. disparate work groups.  Products like HP's OpenMail allow a company
  36. to build a company-wide messaging infrastructure which can become a corporate
  37. information utility -- routing all type of information, extending workgroup
  38. computing across the corporation, linking users to information resources, and
  39. providing automated database access.  This flattened architecture reduces
  40. administration and management costs as well as ensures the safe and reliable
  41. delivery of your information.

  43. NEXTSTEP is a leading object oriented development environment and user
  44. environment.  NeXT, Inc. has introduced a line of object development tools
  45. which allow companies to build distributed, object-oriented applications which
  46. can support enterprise computing requirements.  HP entered into a relationship
  47. called "Object Enterprise" in May 1993.  Object Enterprise was designed to
  48. enable customers to use NeXT and HP technology to develop and deploy
  49. object-oriented, client/server-based applications across the enterprise.

  51. "One gap in the technologies available for enterprise computing," said Shelton,
  52. "has been an efficient way of distributing objects and communications between
  53. processes across the entire enterprise.  With OpenMail and NEXTSTEP we expect
  54. to bridge this gap by providing a line of development tools which allow
  55. corporations to leverage their investment in OpenMail by building e-mail
  56. enabled applications in NEXTSTEP."  This new product line from IT Solutions is
  57. called "Messaging Solutions" and includes end-user applications, configurable
  58. server applications, and object-oriented development tools for NEXTSTEP and
  59. OpenMail.

  61. The first product from IT Solutions in the "Messaging Solutions" product line,
  62. Emissary,  shipped to customers this week.  A second release, expected by the
  63. end of November, will expand the electronic mail application to allow add-in
  64. modules to extend the functionality a user has available.  The first add-in,
  65. allowing access to OpenMail "bulletin boards" will also ship in late November.
